She had a meeting with her Ground Floor co-star, Skylar Astin during a musical theatre convention. Her breakout TV role was in Cougar Town. She played a character who was featured in the three-episode pilot of Undateable and was also credited. Because both Bill Lawrence's Ground Floor as well as Undateable were multi-camera comedies they were able to be shot concurrently. She also starred in the pilot episode of Season 10. For her part in Ground Floor television critic Alan Sepinwall said Heelan is "simply terrific as Jenny she is warm and witty while always feeling like an independent, strong character". The Los Angeles Times said Heelan "makes Ground Floor watchable" she was described as "remarkably alive and in the moment"; she brings to life everything she touches.
